Happy Endings
Below is one story...
Dear Penelope (if you don't read our newsletter, Penelope is a cat that has her own column each issue.)
I really enjoy reading your purrfect column in the
newsletter and decided to write about my sweet Lacey-girl that was adopted in May 2007
from the Parkersburg shelter. I was going to try and write this from Lacey's
perspective, but kept coming to the realization of how lucky I am that SHE found
ME! So for all of you that are on the fence about adopt/don't adopt/maybe
later...read on...
I wanted a companion for my young beagle. Maggie is one-year old, full of life, ultra smart (of course!), and pure joy in my life. I got her from a rescue shelter at 10 weeks of age soon after I lost my beloved Molly. Shortly after Maggie came home with me, my mother became seriously ill and I needed to spend a lot time with her. That left me feeling a little guilty about having to leave Maggie alone so much, but I wasn't quite sure if I could take on another dog just to keep her company.
As luck would have it, Maggie and I were on our way home one Saturday afternoon and the car just turned onto 29th Street and headed straight for the Shelter. I was still uncertain about taking in another dog -- but there she was -- Lacey. Carrie, HSOP President and friend, told me all about Lacey and how she had only recently been brought in by a previous owner. Lacey was a little bigger dog than I was thinking about, but she was begging me with beautiful brown eyes and a waggly little stub of a tail to just give her a chance.
So out to the play yard we went. Maggie played, too, and the girls hit it off immediately. Lacey's resume stated that she was very sweet, already spade, housebroken, and loved to go for car rides. Not a bad presentation, but play time was over and I still wanted to think about it. Lacey had already made up my mind though! I opened the car door to put Maggie in and Lacey jumped in immediately and sat in the seat. There was no budging her out of the car either! She had decided we were the right family for her, and kept looking at me like "what's the hold up?" I had been adopted! It was actually a very giddy feeling!!
Sorry this is so long, but I want to encourage everyone who's still thinking "maybe" to just stop in and see if any of the pets want you. I can't express how lucky I feel everyday that Lacey found me. We bonded immediately and Lacey still refuses to let me out of her sight. She "talks", has learned new tricks, and loves to give kisses. She and Maggie are best buddies and do everything together -- especially chasing the bunnies in the back yard. They share their toys and food, (but not too good with the treats), and have even learned that they have to share "mommy's" attention.
Life is great and I have two of the best friends snuggled up beside me every night just making sure I'm safe. I have been blessed with two more of God's furry angels. Whoever said that "it's a dog's life" truly understood the joys of canine companionship. I'm especially grateful for the HSOP. You kept my Lacey safe until she found me/us, and we'll always appreciate your efforts and spirit that make it possible for such precious pets to get a second chance. Life is good.
