Animal Control

We provide animal control services to Wood County which includes the pickup, shelter, medication and care for stray dogs picked up in the county. Our contracts with the County and city do not include cats, therefore we do not provide pick-up services for cats. However, our shelter does accept cats surrendered as stray or owned animals.

Animal Control regular hours are: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Only emergency service calls will be responded to after these hours. All other calls will be addressed as soon as possible within regular working hours.

Emergency Services

Our animal Control Officers provide 24 hour emergency services for injured or abused animals in our community.

Stray animals running at large are not included in emergency services. These will be dealt with during regular working hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Spay/Neuter Financial Assistance

We also provide financial assistance forms to area residents to assist and promote spaying and neutering of their pets in an effort to reduce the overpopulation problem. A form is required for each animal that needs to be spayed or neutered. You will need to come to the shelter to obtain such a form. Please check to see if your vet participates in this program and will accept this form. Most veterinarians in our area do participate, but you should check in advance.

Wood County Dog Licensing

You may purchase your Wood County dog license at the Humane Society. Parkersburg resident licenses are $6 and Wood County licenses are $3. There are required annually.

Cremation Services

We do provide to the general public cremation services for their animals. We also provide these same services to local veterinarians and some funeral homes. Different options are available and include private cremation with return of the ashes to the owner.

Pet Visitation Services

We offer visitation services through volunteers resources to nursing homes, assisted living centers and hospitals. Please contact our Executive Director, 422-5541, Ext. 110, if you interested in such services.
